Create a Mason Jar Library in 4 Steps

For the last few years, Mason jars have been popping up in all sorts of craft projects. I’ve found some of them in antique shops and even purchased solar lids that turn them into wonderful night lights. We often had Mason jars of fresh preserves and vegetables from my grandmother’s garden in my kitchen growing up. She passed when I was 9 years old and the whole family mourned when we consumed her last jar of canned apples.

If you’re also comforted by the country-chic charm of Mason jars, I’ve got a new use for them that you might not have considered. This is especially true if you’re also a book lover.

Like many bibliophiles, I’ve got a collection of books on my shelves just waiting to be read. There are stacks of autobiographies, novels, mysteries, self-help, and more hanging around my house. When I finish a book I experience a brief moment of panic because I don’t know what to read next! I confronted my indecision head on by creating a Mason jar library.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Grab some pretty pastel copy paper and cut the pages into four column lengthwise (fold in half and in half again and you’re there).

  2. Write the names of all the books you want to read on the strips of paper and cut between titles.

  3. Fold them up and drop them into a Mason jar.

  4. The next time you’re unsure of what to read, let the universe decide! Pick a piece of paper and start reading!

If you want to be a bit more specific and have a clue about which genre you’re selecting, you can write all titles of the same genre on the same color paper. That way, if you’re tired of biographies, you can be sure to select a mystery for your next book! Happy reading!
